Steele awesome after all these years...

abgelegt unter: Mediales

Looking back on my long list of former TV show fandoms I'd have to say that "Remington Steele" was the first real big one. After "Die Schwarzwaldklinik" (well, I am a child of the 80's), "Agentin mit Herz" (in English: "Scarcrow & Mrs. King") and probably "Falcon Crest". I've seen the first "Remington Steele" episodes in the late 80's and catched quite a few reruns in the 90's.
In the early 90's I was thrilled to find out that some international station, which we got via cable, aired the show as well and of course they showed them in English instead of the dubbed version in Germany. I remember skipping a meeting with some friends from school one afternoon because I didn't want to miss one of the crucial last few episodes, which I hadn't seen before. Pathetic, I know. But that was over 15 years ago, when I didn't own a VCR or a DVR and had no way of getting my hands on a copy of the episodes or any information about the storyline. That was way before the golden internet years :-)
A German station started to rerun the show a few months back and I decided to record all of the episodes, just for the sake of having them in case I ever felt the need to rewatch them. I hardly ever watch an epsiode when it airs (in the afternoon) or when I've recored it. I sometimes get stuck on an episode while editing it for storage, but as editing is rather time consuming I try not to get stuck too often. I still have about a dozen unedited episodes on my DVR's harddrive.

For reasons unknown last week I tried to find out if I could rent DVDs of the show via Amazon Germany, which isn't possible. But I could have bought a DVD set of the first season, imported from Amazon UK. I looked into it and found out that I could save about 10 € by ordering it in the UK directly and that's what I did. The package arrived yesterday and I watched part of the rather small bonus features and two episodes yesterday and another one today. And as much as I liked the German version then and now in the reruns, there is nothing like the English original. I could start to quote my favorite lines and scenes, but then I would still be writing about it in the morning. But it's just really, really cool.
Part of the fun watching it now might be due to the very oldfashioned style. Wardorbes, equipement and just everything looks so weird, but still so familiar. And the show itself feels so familiar too, which might be due to the fact that I've already seen some episodes multiple times. Bro #3 has all the German episodes on tape from a rerun a couple of years ago and I remember watching some of them at that time, when I was sick at home.

But to be able to watch this all in English now once again is a very special treat and I can't wait to see some of my favorites from the first season.
